2019 kicked off our first ever Youth Showcase featuring the talent of Western Music singer Venessa Carpenter & Cowboy Poet Colten Blankman. The event is hosted by Bonneville Brewery located in Tooele Utah. With over 100 in attendance for our first ever show, those who attended said it was a great way to kick off the 6th annual Western Music & Songwriters Series. The showcase is designed to allow our up and coming youth a chance to be in the spotlight by allowing them to have their own show the way they want it. Also giving them a chance to showcase their talent as we debut them on Saturday night at the main show. We encourage all of our up and coming youth to reach out to us we would love to have you be part of the Western Music & Songwriters Series.
Tib Champneys is 12 years old from Stockton, Utah. He began cowboy poetry in 2017 when his grandparents thought it would be fun to enter him in the Cache Valley Cowboy Rendezvous youth poetry competition. He is now a 3 time champion of that competition. He has also performed on Channel 13 News with Big Buddha at the Antelope Island Cowboy Legends and at the Weber County Library Series.
Tib loves being a cowboy. The poems that he has written with his mom and his grandma are based on “mostly” true events. Tib has been inspired by adventures that he has been on, and the people who have taken him along.
Horses are a big part of Tib’s life. He is very successful with training young horses and participating in 4-H. He is the 2019 Tooele County 4-H two-handed champion and the bitted reserve champion. Tib is planning to begin Jr. High School rodeo this year.
15 years old Venessa Carpenter grew up in East Texas but now calls Arimo Idaho home. It was in east Texas where she learned to sing and play the guitar. One day with her sister going to pick up a client’s horse in Golden TX, a wrong road led them to the house Kasey Musgraves. That’s when the adventure began. Wasn’t long Venessa found herself taking guitar lessons from John Defoore and Charlie Shearer, Charlie also helped with the voice coaching along with his wife Shawnda Rains. Soon she was performing for Rains Entertainment Group in Dennison TX at the Rialto Theater, Tex Ritter Showcase in Carthage TX and Gladewater Opry in Gladewater Texas. In the fall of 2017 her Dad took a job in Utah and moved the family to Idaho. It was there she found IWMA and the Cowboy Poets of Utah. Her talent has landed her on stage opening for people such as Chad Prather (comedian) at the Bannock County Fair, Mary Kay, and Trinity Seely just to name a few. Venessa was featured in the Western Music Songwriters Series first Youth Showcase last January 2019 in Tooele Ut and had the pleasure to perform at the Arizona Folklore Preserve for the IWMA Youth Chapter in February 2019.
